::baby memories::

When I was pregnant with O, I told myself I am going to capture and record every little detail of her life in some form. Well, the reality is, once your baby is born, you'll have to really make an effort to take photos or videos, and collect momentos; otherwise, you'll never get around to it.

The first thing I would suggest is to take chronological photos of your baby from month one through twelve. Between architectdad's trigger-happy finger and Grandpa R's new camera, we've managed to capture every month of O's life so far in digital form. Many baby stores sell "first year" photo frames, which makes displaying those first year memories a breeze. Oh yeah...and Dads (or coaches): if you still have your wits about you after your baby is born, try to take a picture of the clock in the delivery room during the first minute of his/her life.

The second thing I would suggest is to buy a digital camcorder. Video captures so much more of your baby's personality than a still photo--if you are an amature like me. You could either string a series of clips together and produce a streaming video, or you could burn the series onto a DVD and send it to your family and friends.

The third thing I would suggest is to buy an archival quality "memories book." I bought the Binth Baby Book for recording O's first years of life. Each hardcover book is handcrafted and silkscreened on recycled white paper. The modern woodland motifs gives this book an edge over the conventional cutesie baby books. You can paste photos and write down milestones in the book; there is even pages for the family tree. The book comes with its own cotton cloth covered keepsake box, which allows you to keep momentos--such as hospital ID bracelets--with the photos and written words. It is a little expensive, at $110.00 each. However, I feel it is a great way to keep track of the important events in your baby's life.

::book for blogging moms and dads::

Yesterday, while walking around the neighborhood with architectdad and O, I bought a book titled "Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything." It is about how companies and entrepreneurs can now utilize the internet to harness the talents and intellects of the international community. I am only on the first chapter, but I already find it fascinating.

Even if you are not into economics and commerce, you may still find it worthy of reading.

::books for modern moms and dads::

There are tons of well-written books out there by world reknowned pediatricians, etc. Such as "The Complete Guide for Your Baby and Young Child." While it is a wonderful reference source for birth through age 5, it is somewhat lacking in graphics and design.

There is a series of books published by Quirk which has that added graphics value, while keeping the topics light and tongue-in-cheek:
  • The Baby Owner's Manual
  • The Baby Owner's Manual: Games and Activities Book
  • The Baby Owner's Manual: Owner's Maintenance Log
  • The Toddler Owner's Manual

Quirk also publishes similar books for dog owners, cat owners and home owners. Check them out on www.amazon.com.

::i can read! wait, but i'm only 3-months old::

Since O sleeps up to 12 hours/night now, she is quite alert most of the day. So to keep her entertained, I've had to start "reading" to her. While visiting our friends in NYC last year, we bought some picture books for O. They are:
  • Black on White by Tana Hoban
  • White on Black by Tana Hoban
  • I Kissed the Baby by Mary Murphy
  • Woof Woof, Baby Flip-A-Face by SAMi
  • Go!, Flip-A-Shape
  • Baby Animals, Flip-A-Face

O seems to be able to see them all, but her favorites are the black and white books. The sharp contrast and bold shapes really catch her attention. I believe you can buy all of these books on http://www.amazon.com/.

It's raining here today, so I guess there'll be no walks with the beagles. But at least the books will keep us occupied for a little while.
